Shining A Light On Atheism

December 20, 2012 by UpNorth

One has to look no further than the bible in order to see the broken condition of an atheist’s heart. The bible makes it clear that those who reject Him are foolish and corrupt and that nothing they do is good. The reason why nothing they do is considered good is because we are all born as corrupt sinners. Once a person rejects God all things are really done to the benefit of themselves. Nothing is done to the glory of God but instead to the benefit and glory of the sinner.

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.” (Psalm 53:1)

The walk of an atheist is a walk of complete and utter rejection of the one true God who created all mankind. It is a walk of confusion, muddled clarity and contradictions. An atheist is commonly referred to as one who does not believe in the existence of God. 1 Some atheists state that atheism is really the lack or absence of a belief. That they don’t have a belief system at all. This is an attempt to distance atheism from being referred to as a faith due to the fact that they really do have a belief system just like a follower of religion has a belief system. This in itself is contradictory. Or put more accurately, a flat out lie. In fact atheist do have a belief. The belief in self.

The belief in self

Atheists have really done nothing more than supplant God with themselves. In rejecting the very idea of a God, they’ve taken the place of God with themselves. They believe there is no higher power than them. That there is no higher authority than man. The bible calls this idolatry. Without God, we are left to do what we consider right in our own eyes. We then become the judge, jury and executioner. We become the builders of the moral platform for mankind.

“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the Lord weighs the hearts.” (Proverbs 21:2)

Most atheists are agnostics

Many atheists are confused by what it means to be an atheist. Most atheists are actually agnostics. Meaning they really do not know if a God exists or not. An atheist believes without a shadow of a doubt God does not exist. They know that God does not exist and this knowledge is what informs their belief. Rarely will a self-proclaimed atheist state that they know for absolute certainty that God does not exist.

The operation of an atheist

Many self-proclaimed atheists will declare God does not exist. Once pushed to prove their claim they will switch to the view of an agnostic and declare they are only stating that there is insufficient evidence of a God and that they are not making an actual claim God does not exist. The atheist does this to alleviate themselves from having to provide evidence for their position. Their next move is to force the theist, better known as the believer, into proving God <strongdoes exist by providing evidence. So while the atheist gets to bounce between the view of an atheist and an agnostic to avoid proving what they claim, the believer is forced into proving their claim. At this point, if the believer refuses to “go first” the atheist will declare that the believer is shifting the burden of proof by not showing evidence of what they claim exists. This is very telling of the rebellious heart of an unregenerate.

Another tactic of the atheist is they will claim that they can’t prove a negative or that they can’t prove something doesn’t exist. However this ploy does not let the atheist off the hook of providing evidence for their claim. Reason being, is that to a believer, plenty of evidence for God exists. This means the way an atheist should provide evidence for their case, is by providing evidence that the believers evidence is not credible. However, an atheist can not do this. They can only reject the evidence of a believer. This is merely another tactic used that allows the atheist to stand on a hill and declare their belief with a loud voice, yet run for cover when pushed to back up their belief.

Atheist rejection of evidence

Atheist typically claim that believers have zero proof that God exist. Their entire belief system is built on this claim. However what atheists have been doing for over a thousand years is merely rejecting the evidence the believer presents and then claiming the believer has zero evidence. This stacks the debate cards in the favor of the atheist. Any and all evidence presented will be scoffed at and rejected by the atheist and the believer is forced to debate based on the terms of the atheist. This debate typically consists of the atheist doing nothing more than just deflecting everything the believer presents while they also try to assert the idea that they are the dominate and brilliant intellectual. Again, because they can not render the believer’s evidence of a God as invalid. The truth is, Christians have proof God exists and have been presenting this truth for over 2,000 years.

The evidence for the existence of God

1) Our moral objective compass that determines when we do right or wrong.
Society does not teach us that lying, stealing from someone or murdering another human is wrong. We know this inherently because if any one of these offenses happened to us or our families we would not need society to rush in and tell us how we should feel about the offense. It is built-in. The theory of evolution presents the idea of survival of the fittest which is void of morality. It doesn’t care about morality. The only thing that matters is surviving. Looking towards society for the laws of morality places life into this idea of survival of the fittest because one person’s right can be another person’s wrong. In fact it is society that once thought things like the eugenics movement, slavery, the holocaust and racial discrimination were good things that made society even better. When God’s built-in moral compass is suppressed we are left to make these kinds of horrific decisions. It is our built-in, God given moral compass that helps us determine what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Rejection of God begs us to answer the question of where do morals come from. Also, who gets to decide who’s morals are the right ones for everyone.

2) Creation screams for the existence of a creator.
An atheist would disagree. However the life of an atheist is a life of complete and total contradiction. They would never agree that a house, a car, a human being, a highway system, a painting, or a plant could appear without a builder, a construction worker, a painter etc… Yet they argue something so complex as the universe and the life within magically created itself from nothing. As if nothing has taken on a new definition of something. As if anyone has ever witnessed things appearing out of complete chaos in thin air and then ordering itself out of its own chaotic mess. To make such a claim would cause someone to be labeled as a lunatic. This line of thinking requires a great deal of blind faith. It takes much more faith to state everything created itself from nothing than it does to believe God created everything. Atheists do have a “faith” and they do have a “belief” system regardless of what they may say to avoid proving their claim.

The atheist would normally assert that God must have a creator if a person believes creation must have a creator. This shows a clear lack of understanding of God. God is eternal and has always existed. He is God. If God was a created being He would not be God. He would be apart of creation and not the creator.

Furthermore God even makes the case that creation serves as a way for us to know He exists.

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” (Romans 1:20)

3) Jesus Christ.
The believer holds as evidence the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Taken into account is the many witnesses and recordings of the life of Jesus. Despite the rejection of Jesus’s claim to be God in the flesh His buried body was never found by the Jews nor the Romans. Christ claimed to be God incarnate, He predicted His death and resurrection from the grave and over 2,000 years later His body has still not been discovered. Considering the irrefutable proof that Jesus did actually exist, this evidence does not bode well for the atheist.
At their very core an Atheist is nothing more than an unregenerate, sinner who is outside the kingdom of God. Those who are outside the kingdom of God, living in rebellion to Him by suppressing the truth, have His wrath abiding upon them.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;” (Romans 1:18)

For their sake, let us pray that atheist everywhere stop trusting in themselves and instead begin to trust in Jesus, the one God sent to save us from His wrath. Let us also exhibit grace remembering that we as believers were once like the atheist; living for ourselves, in complete rebellion against God.
