The Bill Nye – Ken Ham Debate Was Not About Truth For Science

February 6, 2014 by UpNorth

If you were hoping for truth to be on display from the corner of secular science and Bill Nye, you were simply out of luck.

The Bill Nye – Ken Ham debate on Tuesday showed exactly what the issue is in our current culture. That truth is on the cutting board. Truth is being replaced with popular opinion and that mankind is still working his hardest to dethrone God and replace God with himself.  Ken Ham made it clear in his opening statement that the creation issue is really about authority. Who is in charge? Is it man, or is it God?  It became quite obvious that the more Bill Nye spoke, the more he wanted to assert man should be in charge despite what the “evidence” says.

Yes. Evidence. For all of the post debate discussions and victory claiming  articles written by those apart of secular science, everyone seems to be ignoring the fact that Bill Nye’s so called evidence is riddled with problems. But see, in a world where truth doesn’t matter and wisdom is absent,  one can simply take anything, call it fact and give a stamp of approval under the umbrella of  “scientific evidence”. Those opposed to creationism are not looking for truth. What they are looking for, are claims to support their position. Those Christians who reject creationism, or are calling for some sort of compromise within the faith, are doing the exact same thing. Negating truth and seeking claims to support their position. For the Christian, discernment is a gift from God and frankly we should be able to see the forest through the trees quite easily. For the unbeliever, we should not expect such discernment as they are suppressors of the truth. The path Bill Nye took during the debate was nothing short of  intellectual dishonesty.

For starters it was obvious Bill Nye was attempting to paint Ken Ham into a fictitious corner. Nye constantly referred to Ken Ham’s belief as the “Ken Ham creation model” which was utterly ridiculous.  Ken Ham didn’t write the bible. It isn’t Ken Ham’s model but a belief that billions of people over 2 thousand years have held close to. To be clear, the model, if anyone’s, belongs to God.

Nye was clever in attempting to paint Ham as anti-American as if he was all for helping America while Ham was all for raising up scientifically illiterate students. Nye’s constant appeal to the public’s emotion was a sign that he was not debating for truth but for popular votes. Despite Ham’s video clips of well known, creation account believing, Christian scientists who have contributed greatly to the human race, Nye kept trying to paint Ham as some fringe lunatic who is against science. More than once Nye brought up the fact that many from different faiths don’t believe in the creation account as if somehow popularity constitutes truth. Again, that’s the issue. Nye wasn’t after truth but rather popular votes for his position.

It was clear Nye was not willing to hold himself up to the same standards he expected Ken Ham to be held to.  Nye claims that because the bible was written two thousand years ago by men that it must be subject to error. That’s like claiming the artwork by Van Gogh could not have been produced by him because it was a long time ago and we only have men to account for it.That’s silly. Since the dawn of man, information has always been passed down by other men. So while this seems hard for Nye to swallow, he has no problem with excepting the idea of  billions of years evolution. A time where no human being was on the planet and no human being recorded anything that supports his view. His evidence, comes from rocks.

An interesting point that seemed to have been glossed over by Nye was the whole issue around stealing borrowing from the creationist worldview in order to support the macro evolutionary worldview which is then used to tear down the creationist worldview. It shows a bit of schizophrenia on the part of Nye. These evolutionists (macro evolutionists), fail to understand that everything they do with science is under the creationist umbrella. The creationists believe God purposed and brought the universe into existence. It is through God every law of nature and logic is upheld and that we don’t live in a world of random chaos.  It is precisely why scientists can theorize and test knowing that the same laws that applied yesterday will be upheld today.  No one goes to sleep wondering if gravity will randomly disappear in the morning. But this is precisely the worldview of those who reject creationism. To them, everything happened out of random chaos with no purpose behind it and to top it off they don’t know why or how it happened.

“We came to be because the universe exists.” – Bill  Nye

While apparently it is the creationist who reject evidence, Nye never responded to Ham’s point that over 90% of dating methods contradict the billions of years theory. That didn’t matter to Nye which was obvious as he continued to peddle the idea that rocks tell us the earth is dated over a billion years based on our dating methods. Nye, again, was not after truth. At least Ken Ham was willing to admit that even creationist can’t prove the age of earth. However he was able to define how creationists come to the belief that the earth is roughly 6,000 yrs old.

What do we make of Bill Nye’s lack of accounting? While he wants to advocate that it is illogical or simply foolish to believe in creationism, a life where God exists and is in control, he can’t account for his worldview. Nye never addressed how he can account for the laws of nature or logic or what force causes them to exist. He never addressed why these laws have to exist and by what authority. Nye admitted he does not know how life came to be but yet, he is confident that rocks that don’t speak, dating methods that contradict and his lack of accounting trump the possibility of God. Is this what science has come to?

When Nye, like most who reject God, realized his “evidence” is chocked full of holes he then proceeds to attack Ham’s Christian adherence. He asserts the old argument that Ham, the Christian, picks and chooses parts of the bible to follow after being educated by Ham on the bible. The reality is, like in all cases, when what the bible presents doesn’t gel with a non-believer’s view they try to attack the credibility of the bible or the believer’s adherence to their faith.

Which brings us to the real issue. Bill Nye’s real issue isn’t about creationism being taught to children. His real issue is with children being exposed to the very idea of God. Bill Nye rejects God and wants everyone else to follow. To do this he must win over popular vote. He’s not concerned with truth, nor are his advocates. This is obvious by the hailing of victory by those who are against creationism. Ken Ham wasn’t concerned with winning. For the Christian, we’ve already won as our victory is in Christ. The purpose of Ham debating was to bring the issue of creationism and evolution to light to foster dialogue and awareness. Not just for the secular world but for Christians as well.

The last point that needs to be made concerns the current day Church. There are many believers that think it is ok to reject the literal 6 day creation account in scripture. Some from within the church are calling for some sort of compromise as they claim it isn’t a big enough issue to cause division. This is an extremely dangerous point of view. Just because the creation account doesn’t attack something such as the deity of Jesus does not mean it is a nonessential.  Rejecting the creation account leads to major biblical problems.  For one, this rejection posits that death entered the world before Adam and Eve sinned. How is that possible if it was due to sin that death entered the world? How can the wages of sin be death (Romans 6:23) if death is apart from sin? How can Adam be responsible for death entering the world if death predates his sin? What is to become of Romans 5:12 that claims death came through sin and sin originated from Adam? It was through the sinning of Adam that death even entered. So if death did not enter through Adam then who was responsible for it? By taking the position that creationism is wrong then man no longer is culpable for sin and death entering the world.  This is where Satan, the great deceiver, has been doing his work amongst undiscerning Christians. Getting them to take the position that they are no longer culpable whether they recognize it or not. Man is taking the same route Adam did in the garden and that is to blame God (Genesis 3:12).

As Christians we should be extremely grateful that God saw fit to use Ken Ham to bring this issue to light. We should also commend him for his willingness to stand up for biblical truth despite the fact that the world and even Christians may criticize and mock him. For all of us in the faith, we need to pray more for discernment. For those who believe in creationism we need to be in prayer for Christians who reject it and be wise to exhibit love towards them. For Christians that reject what the bible claims in Genesis I would encourage you to pray for mercy for calling God’s Word a lie while trusting in the faulty wisdom of man. Evolutionists have no more “proof” concerning the age of the earth then creationists. However Christians can at least account for their worldview and this worldview has more than enough sufficient evidence for it to be a rational and accepted view.
